Year-In-Review Year 4
It is difficult for me to imagine that year 4 at UC has come and gone. I can remember back to my second year when I was deciding if I should finish my undergraduate degree in four years without co-op or five years with many co-op experiences. Now, I couldn't be more thrilled that I have one co-op experience and two academic semesters still to complete.
Year 4 was a great learning experience for me. During the fall semester, I immediately jumped back into student involvement. Through SAC, I led the charge as parade chair for Homecoming 2018. I was committed to SACUB every Monday evening as we worked to better the allocation of the general fee for all students. My term as KBSA President was extended through the full academic year and I worked endlessly with my team to streamline our processes and increase efficiency in our organization. We created amazing events and I look forward to supporting future growth of the organization. During the fall, I was an integral part of the planning committee for President Pinto's Inauguration ceremonies. To participate in the day's events and welcome the 30th President to the University was one of the best moments of my fall semester.
In the spring semester, I switched over to a co-op position with Deloitte during "busy season" in the accounting world. A challenge for me was having to relinquish so much of my time on campus. I struggled with the concept of not attending organization meetings and needing to drop out of others. Because I'm a firm believer in keeping commitments, I felt like I was "quitting" for the semester because I just didn't have enough time in my day. It was difficult, but it taught me the importance of delegation and relying on others. I knew I couldn't accomplish everything I wanted to without help from others. It also taught me the importance of friendships. Even when I was tired from working, seeing my friends and family was a highlight to my work-filled weeks!
This year, I self-designed my first Honors experience for my travels to Australia. I created a blog, 'ATravelingNutmare.com', that focuses on saying “Yes!” to traveling with severe food allergies. When faced with language barriers, various culture differences, and airplane rides, it is much easier to give in to your disability and just stay home. I have taken a humanitarian approach to sharing my own experiences, good and bad, to help the allergy community find their own strength. I've continued this project past the deadline as I have truly grown through the feedback I have received from others. While it was difficult during my co-op in the spring semester, I picked up my writing again just before my travels to Hilton Head Island and London this past May! I continue to get a great response from my readers, so I hope to continue the blog to spread the news of safe adventures for allergy disabled travelers.
As I look ahead to my next year, I hope to continue fostering new and old friendships. I'm excited to accept a full time job and prepare for life after graduation. I am excited to travel more and often over the next year. I am looking forward to being back involved on campus, but not making involvement every piece of my campus life. Here comes the last year of my college career!
