Year-in-Review Year 2
As my second year at the University of Cincinnati comes to a close, I've had time to think and reflect on my experiences since last August. While many students probably have similar experiences to freshman year, I've had a few drastic changes occur. For one, out went the dorm and in came an apartment. While I was still living with three other roommates, I was no longer surrounded by my best friends down the hall and no longer had that meal plan. While I knew I wouldn't starve and could take care of one issue, my friends being gone was harder than expected.
As I led the Honors Retreat for the first time in August, I met some incredible incoming freshman, some of which became my best friends through the school year. One of the most important things I've learned through the year was to leverage relationships. With academics, organizations, volunteer work, and family time, it sometimes is hard to fit everything in to one week. I've done a better job at managing my time and keeping up with the parts of my life I value the most.
Another important task of this school year was refining my campus involvement. While I enjoyed the organizations of my freshman year, I knew it was time to choose the activities I valued most. I accepted the position as the Vice President of the Kolodzik Business Scholars program and have undertaken all social media outlets including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Our focus has shifted to maintaining relationships with our alumni and we need to keep all platforms up to date. I'm grateful to continue my journey as a Bearcat Buddy tutor. It is a rewarding experience to walk into Ethel M. Taylor Academy each week to know that I've made a friend and we've both influenced each other's lives.
It seemed like my second year flew by in the blink of an eye. I continued developing my professional skills as a Student Associate in the President's Office, where I get to enjoy working with President Ono and his staff. They have become a second family to me, and I enjoy working various events while I'm on co-op, just so I can continue my relationship with my co-workers.
As I head into summer, I reflected on some personal goals that I would like to achieve. I've realized there are times that I get so caught up in the busyness of life, that I forget to take a step backwards and smell the roses. I'm working on improving my life balance for the upcoming year. While keeping a perfect academia record is a great achievement, it comes with its downsides of stress and lack of sleep. My goal is to get sleep and increase my daily activity. It's important to be present in the moment, and sleep is a key to improving this facet.
During the month of May, I accepted a sales and customer relationship management internship at AMEND Consulting where I have met some amazing Cincinnati community leaders. It has been great to learn about a side of business I might not have known or understood from an Accounting side. In June, I am working for Barnes Dennig, a Cincinnati region public Accounting firm. It will be a great opportunity to work in a real Accounting-world scenario.
As I look to my third year of college, I can't wait for Bearcat football, meeting new people, travelling, and spring co-op. Go Cats!
