A Traveling 'Nut'mare - Australian Study Abroad Experience
"I am not the same seeing the moon shine on the other side of the world."
As I reread the above quote over and over in my mind, it continues to ring true. I spent my fall 2017 semester creating and fulfilling my self-designed Honors experience. As I have had severe food allergies since the seventh grade, I've had to change my lifestyle, eating habits, and travel destinations. I recognize that allergists caution severely allergic travelers from going to certain destinations. It's my goal to tell the other side of the story by saying "yes!" to traveling with food allergies.
As I registered for the Lindner College of Business course, "Economics of Immigration in Australia" during the spring of 2017, I began to prepare for the upcoming journey. I wanted to publicly share about my preparations and experiences through the creation of a blog. I started ATravelingNutmare.com in September 2017 and have been blogging ever since!
My blog is focused around raising awareness of food allergies and sharing my personal stories. I've opened up my world to the allergy community by talking about what it means to have a disability, the struggles it can be when dealing with a language barrier, and my own tips and tricks to traveling abroad or domestically. I love to tell funny stories that have happened, as well as the embarrassing moments.
The second piece of my trip was spending the first part of Christmas break in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. I shared real time experiences to my blog followers of restaurants I visited and foods I tried... kangaroo, emu, and duck! Because of the amazing experience I had in Australia, I've continued my blog into the new year to cover some of my domestic traveling.
It was an incredible experience that I can't wait to share and continue. There is more to come.... check out my live blog at atravelingnutmare.com/!
